The USS Sacajawea (NCC-598),[1] also known as the Sacagawea[2], was a 23rd century Federation starship, a Hermes-class scout in Starfleet service in the 2260s[2] and 2270s[1] decades. It was the first command of Captain James T. Kirk. (TOS reference: Star Fleet Technical Manual, TOS novel: The Captain's Oath)

From 2261 to 2264, Captain James T. Kirk was the ship's commanding officer. During that time, the ship was referred to as Sacagawea.

In 2261, the Sacagawea was part of Starbase 24's border patrol force, headed by senior captain Robert Wesley. Two months after his appointment as captain, Kirk led a mission that stopped a Xarantine freighter from smuggling Orion slaves across the Federation border. Soon after, during a patrol of UFC 620, the Sacagawea was failed to prevent Klingon Empire pirates from pillaging Shinohara's World because Kirk underestimated the Klingons' gambit.

In 2262, the vessel suffered a catastrophe. Its crew was temporarily reassigned around Vega colony.

At the turn of 2264 and 2265, Captain Kirk moved on to command the Constitution-class heavy cruiser USS Enterprise. (TOS novel: The Captain's Oath)

Mike Cleary had distinguished himself on the Sacajawea prior to joining the crew of the USS Enterprise as well. (TOS novel: Ex Machina)

During a mission in 2279, Admiral Kirk reminisced about his experiences aboard the Sacagawea, including his service alongside Doctor Leonard H. McCoy and Gary Mitchell. (TOS novel: The Higher Frontier)
