The USS Salk (NCC-10001) was a 24th century Federation starship, a M'Benga-class rescue/hospital ship.

History[]

This vessel entered Starfleet service on reference stardate 2/8112, and remained in active service until at least the 2360s decade. (FASA RPG module: Star Trek: The Next Generation Officer's Manual)

This hospital ship was named after a previous hospital vessel, the 23rd century USS Salk. The name continued in the 2370s with a later vessel, the Nebula-class USS Salk. (TOS - The Chosen comic: "Blood Enemies"; ST video game: Armada II)

Background[]

The Salk was named, like the other ships of its class, for Human doctors and medical scientists of history. This vessel was named for Jonas SalkWP, discoverer of the polio vaccine.
