The USS Sao Paulo (NX-74205-A) was a Federation starship, a Defiant-class escort in Starfleet service in the 24th and 25th centuries. Following a retrofit in 2410, the Sao Paulo-A became the prototype of the Sao Paulo-class tactical escort. (ST video games: Armada, Armada II; STO - "Klingon War" mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
This ship was the successor in name to another that honored a city in Brazil on Earth's South American continent. The previous Sao Paulo had been renamed Defiant. (DS9 episode: "The Dogs of War")
History
Edit
In 2376 and 2377, the Sao Paulo-A participated in repelling two invasions by the Borg Collective and the incursion of Species 8472. (ST video games: Armada, Armada II)
In the early 25th century, the Sao Paulo underwent an extensive refit that replaced or updated all of its major components, including the addition of quad phaser cannons tied directly into the ship's engines for power. (STO - "Klingon War" mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
By the year 2410, a depiction of the Sao Paulo-A was used to represent its class in the ship selection screen of Starfleet's shipyards across the Milky Way Galaxy. (STO - "Klingon War" mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
The Sao Paulo participated in various engagements between the Federation and hostile parties. (STO video games: Legacy of Romulus, Delta Rising, Iconian War)
Background
Edit
No specific history or definitive final fate was established for this vessel in the Armada series as its name was selected for a destroyer by the Armada I, II game developers, and is placed randomly each time the ship appears.
In Star Trek Online, it is revealed that the second Defiant-class USS Sao Paulo was the first ship of a refit subclass named for itself, some 35 years after the first USS Sao Paulo was renamed Defiant.
