Service history and disposition[]

Shepherd shared its registry number with a 24th century vessel, the USS Thomas Paine. (FASA RPG module: Star Trek: The Next Generation Officer's Manual)
In was succeeded in name by an Oberth-class USS Shepherd. (TOS - Captain's Log comic: "Sulu")
