The USS Sutherland (NCC-72015) was a Federation Nebula-class explorer starship in service to Starfleet in the late 24th century.

History

In 2368, the Sutherland was temporarily commanded by Lieutenant Commander Data while it was part of a blockade along the Romulan-Klingon border. Lieutenant Commander Christopher Hobson served as the ship's first officer. (TNG episode: "Redemption, Part II"; Decipher RPG module: Starfleet Operations Manual; WizKids module: Tactics)

The Sutherland was equipped with a Yoyodyne propulsion system, and Type-X phasers. (WizKids module: Tactics)

The Sutherland was among the vessels that took part in Operation Return in 2374. (ST reference: Ships of the Line 2010)

Later in the war it was assigned to the Ninth Fleet at Bajor and commanded by Captain Shelby. Manuele Atoa also served aboard the Sutherland. (DS9 episode: "You Are Cordially Invited"; DS9 - Worlds of Deep Space Nine novel: The Dominion: Olympus Descending; WizKids module: Tactics)

The Sutherland docked at Deep Space 9 again several months later. Jadzia Dax wanted to invite several of its crew members to a party on the station. (DS9 episode: "Change of Heart")

Later that year, the Sutherland was one of sixteen Federation ships assigned to defend the Setlik system against Cardassian forces during the Dominion War. (SCE eBook: War Stories)

In 2385, the Sutherland was patrolling the Romulan border and was due to be relieved by the USS Enterprise. (ST - The Fall novel: Peaceable Kingdoms)

This ship was named for Horatio Hornblower's fictional 74-gun ship of the line, the Sutherland. (Shipyards reference: Starfleet Ships 2294 - The Future)

Alternate timeline

In an alternate timeline where the Cardassians did not withdraw from Bajor, Data was given permanent command of the Sutherland in 2373. (ST - Myriad Universes novel: A Gutted World)

In Armada II it was succeeded by a Aegian-class vessel.
