A friendly reminder regarding spoilers! As always, the expanded Trek universe is in a period of major upheaval with the continuations of Strange New Worlds and Prodigy, the advent of new eras in gaming with the Star Trek Adventures RPG and Star Trek Online, as well as other eventful releases such as Section 31, the ongoing IDW Star Trek comic and spin-off Star Trek: Defiant. Therefore, please be courteous to other users who may not be aware of current developments by using the {{spoiler}}, {{spoilers}} OR {{majorspoiler}} tags when adding new information from sources less than six months old (even if it is minor info). For other uses, see Thunderchild.

The USS Thunderchild (NCC-634549-B) was a 25th century Federation starship, a tier 3-rated Thunderchild-class heavy escort refit and prototype of its class, in Starfleet service in the 2400s and 2410s decades. (STO - Crossfire mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

Service history[]

Namesakes[]

USS Thunderchild 2411

The venerable Akira-class starship Thunderchild.

In the novel The War of the Worlds by the Human author H.G. Wells, the HMS Thunder Child was a seagoing, steam-propelled warship that drew Martian fire away from escaping civilians. This vessel became the namesake for the Akira-class starship USS Thunderchild. (TOSC Issue 12: "USS Thunderchild")

In the year 2373, the USS Thunderchild (registry number NCC-63549) was one of the Akira-class starships that formed part of the fleet fighting the Borg Queen's Borg cube at Earth during the Battle of Sector 001. (TNG movie: Star Trek First Contact)

At some point between 2387 and 2423, the MACO marines detachment of the Thunderchild served as a boarding party and helped save the "T-child" from an Undine bioship attack. (STO novel: The Needs of the Many)

Active service[]

Thunderchild-B

The Thunderchild-B in 2409.

The prototype of the Thunderchild class, the Thunderchild-B represented a refit configuration of the tier 3-rated Akira-class heavy escort in the year 2409. The Thunderchild was a more compact iteration of the venerable 24th century Akira but its components remained interchangeable with other heavy escort classes of the Akira-line. (STO - Crossfire mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

Akira class variants 2411

Starfleet's multi-mission command cruisers in 2411.

Flag officers of the Khitomer Alliance could deploy the Thunderchild-B alongside other spacecraft for assignments across the galaxy's quadrants as part of Operation: Delta Rising's four-quadrant strategy in 2410. (STO - New Dawn mission: "Admiralty System")

From 2410 onwards, the Thunderchild-B represented its class on the shipyards interfaces operated by New Romulus Shipyards, Klingon Defense Force Order of Builders and Starfleet Shipyards Operations at Alliance facilities across the Milky Way Galaxy. (STO - Refractions missions: "Explore the Flotilla", "First City", "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

In 2411, Starfleet upgraded the Akira-class strike wing escort into a dedicated command and control vessel. To that end, the original Thunderchild received a refit to legendary starship standards and became Starfleet's multi-mission command cruiser.

The Thunderchild-B continued its service as a tier 6-rated multi-mission command cruiser, while Starfleet retrofitted the other lead ships of Akira-derived classes as well: USS Oslo, USS Zephyr, USS Matsumoto, USS Alita and USS Armitage. This included fitting their hangar bays with a wing of command Kodai-class fighter squadron. (STO website: Refractions: The Legendary Akira Multi-Mission Command Cruiser)
