The USS Valiant was a 22nd century Federation starship, a Daedalus-class explorer in Starfleet service in the 2160s decade. (ST reference: Federation: The First 150 Years)
Service history and disposition[]
Following the formation of the Federation in the year 2161, the Valiant was one of five new or upgraded warp 7 starships. Starfleet deployed them as explorers in the galaxy, a mission that continued into 2162. Its sister ships included USS Daedalus, USS Essex, USS Horizon and USS Archon. (ST reference: Federation: The First 150 Years)
The Valiant inherited its name from the 21st century Earth galactic survey cruiser SS Valiant, launched by the United Nations in 2064, merely a year after after Doctor Zefram Cochrane's first warp flight aboard the Phoenix. This pioneering spacecraft was lost in 2069 following an encounter with the galactic barrier. (ST reference: Star Trek Chronology)
In turn, a new Columbia-class cruiser named the USS Valiant was under construction by July 2165. Alongside the USS Phoenix, Valiant formed the fourth pair of starships built to Columbia-class specifications from scratch. (ENT - Rise of the Federation novel: Live by the Code)
