The USS Wellington (NCC-50000) was a Federation starship, the prototype Wellington-class class XI transwarp light cruiser in Starfleet service in the 24th century. This ship was named for Humans and locations from the history of Earth. This vessel was succeeded in its name by a later ship, the Niagara-class USS Wellington.
Service history and disposition[]
Construction of this vessel was completed on reference stardate 2/8802, in the 2340s decade. This vessel was commissioned at one of the three shipyards that produced Wellington-class vessels, either Vannis Shipyards, Troyius Shipyards or Argelius Shipyards. (FASA RPG module: Star Trek: The Next Generation Officer's Manual)
- Before The Star Trek Encyclopedia clarified the class of the Niagara-class USS Wellington referred to in TNG episode: "11001001", FASA had apparently intended to assign this ship as the Wellington mentioned. This contradiction can be reconciled by presuming the newer Niagara-class ship had succeeded this vessel and assumed its name, although there's no specific reference in the FASA material that supports the vessel was no longer in service.
- Although canon Star Trek never described the "transwarp drive" experiments of the late 23rd century as being successful upgrades, many ships in FASA RPG sources were described as transwarp vessels. This can be reconciled by assuming whatever upgrades took place became integrated in the warp drive capabilities seen in canon and as such, were not commonly mentioned, and perhaps were only marginally effective to the point they didn't bear mentioning. It is also possible that the advent of the transwarp fleet could be interpreted to represent a different continuity.
