The USS Yangtzee Kiang (NCC-72453) was a 24th century Federation spacecraft, a Danube-class runabout in service to Starfleet in the late 2360s decade. (ST reference: The Star Trek Encyclopedia)

Service history and disposition[]

The Yangtzee Kiang was one of the first runabouts assigned to Deep Space 9 after the Federation took possession of the space station in the year 2369, and was transported to the station by the starship USS Enterprise-D. Following the disappearance of the USS Rio Grande into the Bajoran wormhole, Major Kira Nerys took the Yangtzee Kiang and pursued Gul Skrain Dukat's Galor-class vessel, which was attempting to open the wormhole. While Dukat's ship was able to enter, the Yangtzee Kiang was unsuccessful as the wormhole had been temporarily sealed by the wormhole aliens. (DS9 episode & novelization: Emissary)

Shortly after, the Yangtzee Kiang was used by Bajoran terrorist, Tahna Los, in an attempt to destroy the wormhole using a bilitrium-based explosive device. Fortunately, his attempt was thwarted by Major Kira. (DS9 episode: "Past Prologue")

A few months later, Commander Benjamin Sisko, Major Kira and Doctor Julian Bashir used the Yangtzee Kiang to take Kai Opaka Sulan on a sight-seeing tour of the wormhole and Gamma Quadrant. Unfortunately, the runabout was forced to crash-land on a penal moon located near the Idran system, after being fired upon by an artificial satellite orbiting the colony. (DS9 episode: "Battle Lines")

Following the crash of the USS Euphrates on Sindorin in 2376, Lieutenant Ezri Dax asked Bashir how many crash-landings he had survived. Bashir replied that he had survived four crashes so far: the Yangtzee Kiang, the USS Rubicon, the stolen Jem'Hadar attack ship, and the Euphrates. (DS9 - Section 31 novel: Abyss)
