The USS Zheng He (NCC-86505) was a 24th century Federation starship, an Inquiry-class battleship in Starfleet service, commissioned in 2398. (PIC episode: "Et in Arcadia Ego, Part II"; Star Trek Adventures module: Utopia Planitia Sourcebook)

Service history and disposition[]

The Zheng He was a successor in its name after a previous USS Zheng He in the 22nd and 23rd century. (STO - Agents of Yesterday mission: "In the Shadow of Cestus")

Launched in 2398, the vessel's commanding officer was Susan Vickers. Early during their service, the Zheng He and her crew made first contact with three different former Romulan subject species in the Xi Hydrae sector. The ship returned to Starbase 718 with much of her crew infected with a previously unknown form of Pilian Lung Mold, leaving the Zheng He without a permanent commanding officer. (Star Trek Adventures module: Utopia Planitia Sourcebook)

In the year 2399, Captain William T. Riker assumed temporary command of the Zheng He and led the 1st Devron Heavy Defense Squadron on an urgent mission to the planet Coppelius after retired Admiral Jean-Luc Picard made a priority request for Starfleet and Federation involvement in response to aggression from the Romulan Star Empire. (PIC episode: "Et in Arcadia Ego, Part II"; Star Trek Adventures module: Utopia Planitia Sourcebook)

After Captain Riker made the squadron's intentions clear, the Romulan fleet withdrew. The Zheng He squadron also departed after Riker left the situation in the hands of Admiral Picard, who was in command of the hired starship La Sirena. (PIC episode: "Et in Arcadia Ego, Part II")

Background[]

  • The Zheng He was a new model of starship not seen before in Star Trek. The assembled fleet all had similar planforms to Zheng He, with minor differences in warp nacelle arrangement and hull detailing. None of the vessels were labeled with names or registry numbers. Riker described the ship as the most formidable vessel ever fielded by Starfleet, meaning that the great number of like vessels was supposed to represent a significant display of military potential.
  • The Zheng He bridge was a re-dress of the USS Discovery bridge set.

  • The class of the ship itself was not named in any production mentioning the vessel, although showrunner Michael ChabonMA has had social media conversations stating class names he would like to give these vessels. On his Instagram story (transcript here), he initially said it that Zheng He belonged to the Curiosity class, which had been the class he earlier specified for the USS ibn Majid. When this inconsistency was pointed out, he provided revised information to admins of Memory Alpha, which designated the Zheng He as an Inquiry-class heavy cruiser. This class name was confirmed in subsequent licensed material ST video game: Star Trek Online and The Official Starships Collection, with the Eaglemoss Starships Collection magazine also establishing the registry number.
