The USS Zheng He (NCC-150) was a 23rd century Federation starship, a Daedalus-class science vessel launched in the 22nd century and returned to Starfleet service in the 2270s decade. Captain Bridget McKinnon was the ship's commanding officer. (STO - Agents of Yesterday mission: "In the Shadow of Cestus")
Service history and disposition[]
In the year 2270, the Zheng He conducted mineralogical research in the Edren system, together with the Gorn Hegemony. The Hegemony and the Federation shared the system and its resources when it was created out of nowhere by the Metron Consortium. Captain McKinnon contacted the USS Pioneer when the ship arrived in the system to support the research. Doctor Ward led the research on Edren IV's surface. When a Gorn ship exploded in the planet's orbit, the Gorn suspected foul play by the Federation and became hostile. Ward and the researchers were taken hostage. The Zheng He was no match for the Hegemonial presence in the system. McKinnon asked Pioneer's CO to help rescue them. The Pioneer's investigation led to the revelation that the Romulan Star Empire had caused the destruction of the Kulshedra-class battleship. Gorn and Starfleet subsequently joined forces to fight the attacking Khenn-class cruisers and Vas Hatham-class birds-of-prey. (STO - Agents of Yesterday mission: "In the Shadow of Cestus")
In 2271, the Zheng He was destroyed in the line of service. By stardate 7062.5, in May 2271, Starfleet was still investigating the loss of the ship. Rear Admiral James T. Kirk, Starfleet's Chief of Operations, contemplated how to redraw patrol routes and assignments to make up for the loss without compromising the relief efforts on Mestiko and Sherman's Planet. Kirk told Commander Montgomery Scott about these considerations. (DTI novel: Forgotten History)
By 2273, Starfleet's defenses were still reeling from the loss of entire ships and their crews, including the Zheng He. The reallocation of resources left Earth without active starships in the vicinity, and reliant on its planetary defense grid. Kirk considered how this proved nearly disastrous when V'ger had menaced Earth and disabled the planetary defense grid. (TOS novel: Ex Machina)
