A universal console was a type of technology, a device that enabled abilities or special weapons aboard the starships they were installed on. In the 2400s and 2410s decades, universal consoles were common aboard state-of-the-art starships of the Khitomer Alliance and its member states' military forces. Standard consoles were installed aboard Federation Starfleet starships in the 2250s decade alongside conventional weapon systems. (STO - Tutorial mission: "Reporting In")
In the year 2270, consoles were in use aboard Starfleet ships as well. (STO - Agents of Yesterday mission: "Earthward Bound")
By 2409, consoles were common on most starships of Starfleet, Klingon Defense Force and the Romulan Republic. These powers formed the Khitomer Alliance in 2410 and were joined by the Dominion's Vanguard Fleet. The allies shared their technologies, including universal console-derived special weapons. Depending on the device, these consoles could be unique to one or some ship classes, or could be installed on any vessel.
