The Universe class[6] was a 26th century Federation starship class, a multi-mission explorer[3] in Starfleet service in the 2550s decade. The USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-J) was a ship of this class. (ENT episode: "Azati Prime")
History and specifications[]
The class was first launched at some point in the 26th century. It was a sister design of the Congo-class.
A Universe-class starship was grown from replicated components. The ship's length was given as 3,219 and 3,618 meters, or 2 miles. The vessel was large enough to be divided into 'Urb' called suburbs, based on various environments, including large parks, entertainment zones and universities. The ship's population included a multi-species crew.
Due to the size, site-to-site transporters replaced turbolifts, and traditional concepts of up and down were redundant in a zero-g environment. Thus, windows covered top and bottom of the saucer. There was no centralised bridge. (ST reference: The Official Starships Collection #89)
Livery[]
In the 25th century, the design of the Universe-class temporal heavy dreadnought cruiser allowed its commanding officer to choose from different designs of livery, which could be modified further at starbases. These included the options Type 1-8, Type 8-J, Upgrade and Veteran. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
Furthermore, the installation of deflector shields from specific factions modified the hull appearance, including shields from the Reman Resistance, the Breen Confederacy and the Dominion. (STO missions: "Coliseum", "Cold Storage", "Boldly They Rode")
History[]
In 2381, the rogue artificial intelligence recreated the USS Enterprise-J for a time travel simulation on the holodeck of the USS Cerritos. (LD video game: The Badgey Directive)
Due to the Temporal Cold War, the 25th century Khitomer Alliance acquired spacecraft from different timelines, allowing the allied militaries of the year 2410 to field tier 6-rated Universe-class temporal dreadnought cruisers alongside their Klingon- and Romulan-built counterparts; the Durgath- and Valkis-class, respectively. (STO website: Reckoning: 26 Century Dreadnought Stats!)
The Universe-class starship Enterprise-J was the Federation flagship during the Battle of Procyon V against the Sphere Builders and their Temporal Liberation Front allies. The 25th century Odyssey-class star cruiser ISS Enterprise-F was able to hold out in direct combat due upgrades it received from the 29th century.
