Revision as of 20:47, 3 November 2008

In the long history of the Star Trek franchise there have been numerous novels, comics, games and other licensed works. However there have also been quite a few projects that never quite made it, this page chronicles those unpublished works.

See also New and Future Releases, for projects which are due to, but have not yet been published.

Novels

The God Thing

Originally announced in the late 1970s, The God Thing was a TOS novel by Gene Roddenberry. The story was originally conceived as the first Star Trek film or the start of a new Star Trek TV series; however, Star Trek: The Motion Picture was made instead. The novel would reportedly deal with humanity's relationship with Gods. Originally commissioned by Bantam Books the novel went through various delays and was eventually passed onto Pocket Books. Over the years several other authors have rewritten the novel, including Walter Koenig and Michael Jan Friedman. The novel is still in limbo and may someday find its way onto bookshelves.

For more information see The God Thing page at The Complete Starfleet Library.

Harm's Way

Harm's Way was to be the second trilogy of the TOS "lower decks" relaunch. The trilogy was to be written by Jerry and Kathy Oltion. However, following The Janus Gate trilogy by L.A. Graf, the relaunch continued with Kevin Ryan's Errand of Vengeance.

The Yesterday Saga

Following the success of A.C. Crispin's Yesterday's Son and Time for Yesterday, the author set about writing a sequel, a trilogy of books taking Kirk, Spock and Zar to Vulcan's past and the time of Surak. Working titles for the trilogy were Return to Yesterday, Yesterday's Vulcan and Yesterday's Destiny. The trilogy was apparently almost completely written but for some reason was cancelled.

Walking Wounded

A post-finale DS9 novel by Bradley Thompson, Walking Wounded was to cover a group of Starfleet veterans recovering from the Dominion War. The novel was cancelled in 2005.

Comics

Trial By Fire!

Number 62 of Gold Key Comics' Star Trek series, Trial By Fire was to be written by John Warner but the series was cancelled before the comic’s completion. The story was to a feature the Enterprise rushing to save a planet from a huge fireball.

A script and more information can be found at the bottom of this page at the Star Trek Comics Checklist.

Star Trek: Realities

Realities was a "what-if?" comic series planned by Marvel Comics. At least two stories were planned before it was cancelled:

A similar novel series "Other Times" is currently in the planning stages.

Star Trek: Special

Wildstorm Comics produced a one-shot short anthology entitled Star Trek Special, containing comic stories from the first four Star Trek television series. Star Trek Communicator writer Rich Handley was slated to write a story for that edition and submitted two entries ("The Needs of the Few," about Spock on Romulus, and "The Barber of Seville," about Mot the Barber). However, his story was cut due to space constraints.

E-Books

Shards and Shadows tie-in

There were plans for a mirror universe Star Trek: Corps of Engineers ebook to be released at the same time as the mirror universe short story anthology Shards and Shadows. Unfortunately the original e-book line was put on hiatus before that time and as such the CoE story was cancelled. The story could not be added into the anthology itself as there was not sufficient budget to add a thirteenth story at that stage, so CoE remains unrepresented in the Mirror Universe series.[1]

Short stories

Now You See Her...

This story by Fred Bronson was originally to be published in the TNG 20th Anniversary anthology The Sky's the Limit. Bronson had to pull out due to other commitments. The Sky's the Limit has stories set in every season of TNG except season four, so presumably this story would have filled that gap.

Games

Borg Assimilator

Borg Assimilator was game by Activision in which the player attempted to assimilate ever more resistant worlds in the hopes of acquiring the right technologies to create a stable omega molecule.

The game would have featured the player fighting through 12 campaign levels while converting living lush worlds into Borg Nanogrids amd facing increased resistance from the local races. Players would have started off with existing colony structures that consisted of a nanogrid generator, an ore refinery and several drones which, over the course of the game, would expand to include regeneration acloves, research centers and even a Borg Queen Hive.

For more information see the Borg Assimilator page at TrekCore.com.

Secret of Vulcan's Fury

This game was an Original Series tale cantered around Vulcan, a relic from its history, the divesting space station Vulcan's Fury and a Romulan plot to go to war with the Vulcans under the guise of peace.

The game was cancelled; however, there is a great deal of interest in getting the material from the game released in some form by fans as it was the last time the entire Original Series cast contributed to a Star Trek project. Fan schemes range from getting a new company to complete the game, the materials being realised for them to do so, or a new TAS episode being created around it. Unfortunately, so far much of the material for the game seems to have been misplaced and for the time being it remains a project that is not to be.

For more information see the Secret of Vulcan's Fury page at TrekCore.com.

"Non-fiction Books"

The Unseen Frontier: Declassified Images from the History of the Federation

A book of new computer generated images by Adam "Mojo" Lebowitz inspired by the success of the Ships of the Line calendars, chronicling the history of the Federation in a National Geographic style layout. After several years of delays the book was cancelled.

A Ships of the Line book was published in 2006 collecting together images previously published in the calendars but other than the covers not including any original images as this book would have.

Enterprise Season 5

In the wake of Star Trek: Enterprise's cancellation a number of planned stories were not told:
