Uploading was a process developed in an alternate timeline where Doctor Noonien Soong's view of artificial lifeforms being accepted by the United Federation of Planets.

It was developed shortly after the campaign for android rights was being made and allowed an organic being to download their mind into a positronic brain. The development of the technology increased the acceptance of androids in society and gave them near equal rights. (TNG novel: Brave New World)
