Urey University was an institution of higher learning in North America on Earth.
Background[]
The university had a large xenobiology research department occupying at least two buildings and featuring dozens of animals, including a rare mature vrell and a Rykunian octopus. The university may have had an observatory at Galileo Tower.
The university was accessible via speedwalk to a city that had a seafood restaurant and theater. The city's authorities had several one-man armed hovercraft. (TOS comic: "Furlough to Fury")
- Urey University was probably named after Harold UreyWP, who had won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for discovering deuterium. He was also known for the Miller–Urey experimentWP, a test that researched the origins of life on Earth. In the test, when early Earth atmospheric gases were subjected to early planetary conditions, the gases formed complex amino acids, building blocks for life. He has an asteroid and lunar crater named after him.
History[]
In the year 2266, Doctor Leonard McCoy of the Federation Starfleet starship USS Enterprise reunited with his estranged daughter Barbara McCoy during a layover. Captain James T. Kirk ran into her when she was suspended upside-down by a tentacle above the maw of a Rykunian octopus. During the visit, the vrell escaped from the xenobiology department and caused widespread property damage. With permission from Colonel Mitchum, Barbara headed up Galileo Tower to calm the animal. It recognized her, but panicked when it saw Kirk further down the stairwell. She reached out anxiously and fell over the side of the stairs. The vrell leaped and caught her, then carried her to Kirk with a final, mortal effort. (TOS comic: "Furlough to Fury")
