As a result, McCoy had little contact with her father until she reached her teenage years. (TOS - My Brother's Keeper novel: Constitution)

In late 2265, Joanna and a group of her friends visited Wyoming on a skiing trip. During the trip, she sent a message to her father telling him that she was safe and was having a great time. Early lifeEdit

The son of a medical doctor and a laboratory technician, Mark Piper was born in Dobbs Ferry, New York, USA on Earth. As he grew older, Piper subscribed to adventure-orientated video periodicals and he eventually decided to join Starfleet as he wanted to see more of the universe, coupled with his desire to be a doctor and treat people. (TOS comic: "Who's Who in Star Trek")

Starfleet careerEdit

Early careerEdit

Piper's career as a physician in Starfleet began in the 2210s, prior to the Federation's "first contact" with the Klingon Empire. Over the next fifty years, Piper became a highly respected and decorated doctor across many planets, collecting mementos as he went. After healing a group of Oritixx traders after they narrowly survived their ships destruction, they presented him with a Baliba'an fertility goddess.

He was also presented with a latinum honor medallion on Cerebus Prime, where he had saved millions of lives by developing a cure for Hiinkan Plague. By the mid-2260s, the Hiinkans were still honoring Piper as they named a third medical center after him. (TOS - My Brother's Keeper novel: Constitution)

USS EnterpriseEdit

Piper was assigned to the USS Enterprise as chief medical officer in 2264 at around the same time as Captain James T. Kirk was assigned as commanding officer. Piper soon established a good rapport with many Enterprise crew members including his head nurse, Christine Chapel. Despite embracing his new assignment, Piper often spoke of retirement. (TOS - My Brother's Keeper novels: Constitution, Enterprise)

During a mission to the planet Dimorus, Piper was tasked with removing a primitive dart from Lieutenant Commander Gary Mitchell after he and Captain Kirk had been ambushed by a group of native hunters. Following the incident on Delta Vega, Piper finally decided to retire and made his request to Captain Kirk, who accepted, stating that after a long and distinguished career, that he needed a rest. (TOS - My Brother's Keeper novel: Constitution) Piper finally departed the Enterprise when the starship arrived in orbit of Earth, transporting to Starfleet Headquarters alongside Daniel Alden and Barbara Smith. (TOS - My Brother's Keeper novel: Enterprise)

Following his assignment aboard the Enterprise, Piper was offered the post as chief medical officer at Starfleet Academy, which he accepted. As part of his position, Piper was tasked with treating cadets who had returned from Starfleet Survival Exercises, as well as treating the typical breaks, sprains and strains. Piper also got to test the latest medical equipment that had been developed, in order to test it and deliver a report on its application. Based on his reports, the device would either be produced, refined or possibly rejected. As he approached the age of 70, Piper had no desire to step down from his position. (TOS comic: "Who's Who in Star Trek")
