By the late 2250s, Kang was serving as an officer aboard the D7-class battle cruiser, IKS Stormwind, under the command of Captain Ibrach. Kang quickly gained a reputation among the Stormwind's officers as a "whelp who wielded to no-one". During a top-secret mission into Federation space in 2257, Kang went to Captain Ibrach's quarters and demanded to know what their mission was as the secrecy impeded his honor as a warrior, even to the point of challenging Ibrach. However, Ibrach laughed and agreed that his reputation was deserved and agreed to share the details of the mission, as Kang would have his own command one day. By 2277, Kang, still holding the rank of captain, was in command of a Kl'ar-class vessel. In this year, Kang was assigned to lead three Kl'ar-class vessels as an ambassadorial escort for Kaare as he traveled into Federation space for diplomatic talks with the Federation on the planet Pollox IV.
The talks quickly broke down due to Starfleet Fleet Admiral Karis Tatenen, and Tatenen beamed back to his escort ship, the USS Enterprise, under the command of Kang's old "friend", James T. Kirk. Kang contacted Kirk and registered his outrage at Tatenen's demand, but the two commanders were able to avoid an armed conflict. However, Tatenen managed to commandeer one of the Enterprise's shuttlecraft and attempted to ram the Klingon ships, but Kang ordered that the shuttle be fired upon and it was destroyed with one phaser blast. By the 2270s, Kang and Mara had several daughters, although Kang was slightly displeased at siring "females". In order to care for the daughters, Mara had retired from miltary service. (TOS - Star Trek II Short Stories short story: "The Blaze of Glory")
