USS Constitution (NCC-1700)[edit | edit source]

The USS Constitution (NCC-1700) was the prototype Federation Constitution-class class I/class XI heavy cruiser/cruiser starship in service to Starfleet in the 23rd century. She was authorized for construction by Starfleet appropriation on stardate 0965 and finally entered service on reference stardate 1/8801. (TOS reference: Star Fleet Technical Manual; FASA RPG module: Federation Ship Recognition Manual)

Service history[edit | edit source]

2240s[edit | edit source]

By 2244 the Constitution, with the assigned registry number of NX-1700, was being constructed under the direction of Admiral William Jefferies and was still about a year away from being launched. Despite being largely incomplete, Jefferies took the Constitution to the Donatu star system after Starfleet received reports that the USS Yorkshire and USS Endeavour had come under attack from Klingon warships. The Constitution arrived just ahead of three Klingon battle cruisers, and together with the Yorkshire and other Starfleet reinforcements were able to hold the system in the ensuing battle. At the conclusion of the battle, the Constitution was left a badly damaged hulk and the extensive repair time meant that she wasn't the first starship to be launched. (TOS - Errand of Vengeance novel: Killing Blow)

The Constitution, now registered as NCC-1700, was launched around stardate 1/8801 following a month of celebrations commemorating the new Constitution-class, and was designated as the Federation flagship. For her maiden voyage the Constitution was assigned a round-trip cruise between Earth and Babel with a crew of Starfleet cadets, honored officers and various Federation diplomats aboard. (TOS comic: "Who's Who in Star Trek")

In 2245, the Constitution came to the assistance of the NX-0002 after she had been disabled in the Sol systems and taken in tow by a Klingon D7-class battle cruiser. After destroying the cruiser, the Constitution's commanding officer boarded the NX-0002 and debriefed all personnel aboard. (TOS - Crew comic: "Shakedown")

2250s[edit | edit source]

In 2257, the Constitution, under the command of Captain Augenthaler, was ordered by Admiral Ellen Mangione to proceed to an unnamed star system near the Klingon Neutral Zone on a classified mission. Arriving around one of the system's three planets ten days later, the Constitution detected an ion trail which led it to discover a Klingon D7-class battle cruiser in orbit. As Augenthaler ordered his ship to battle stations, the Constitution was once again contacted by Mangione who ordered the ship to depart immediately and ordered the crew never to speak of the matter again in accordance with General Order 9.

After departing the system, the Constitution started to perform a long-overdue security sweep of the sector before Augenthaler was contacted by Admiral Blosser on Starbase 23 and ordered to proceed to Sordinia IV and investigate a series of unknown satellites that had appeared in orbit of the planet. After arriving in the Sordinia star system, the Constitution was contacted by Prime Vodis Vodanis who informed Augenthaler that his people were hysterical. At Commander Akira Hirota's suggestion, he and Augenthaler beamed down to the surface and left newly-assigned Second Officer James T. Kirk in command.

Shortly after Augenthaler and Hirota had transported down, the Sordinian capital city came under fire by the satellites, and when the Constitution intervened by disabling one of the satellites, the remainder opened fire on the starship and knocked her deflector shields down by 55%. Rather than risking serious damage to the Constitution, Kirk ordered a withdrawal to a safe distance to consider options. (TOS - My Brother's Keeper novel: Constitution)

2260s[edit | edit source]

The Constitution was later refit to mk III Achernar-subclass specifications and re-entered service around stardate 2/0206. (FASA RPG module: Federation Ship Recognition Manual)

In 2267, the Constitution was one of several starships that were undergoing repairs at Starbase 11 when the USS Enterprise arrived following an encounter with an ion storm. (TOS episode: "Court Martial")

By 2268 the Constitution was under the command of Captain Phil Waterston, during which time, he attended a discreet meeting with Captain James T. Kirk and several other officers about the discovery of Section 31. (TOS - Section 31 novel: Cloak)

Later service[edit | edit source]

On stardate 2/1205 (c.2270) the Constitution was removed from active service and placed in the inactive reserve fleet. (FASA RPG module: Federation Ship Recognition Manual)

By stardate 2/4011 (early 2300s) the Constitution had either been lost or decommissioned and replaced by a new Excelsior-class bearing the name. (FASA RPG module: Star Trek: The Next Generation Officer's Manual)

Decipher continuity[edit | edit source]

In another continuity, the Constitution entered service in 2245 under the command of Fleet Captain Garth of Izar, who retained command until 2255. During this time, the Constitution was involved in the Axanar Rebellion.

Captain Darion Page assumed command of the Constitution in 2256 and remained in command until the ship was lost in action in 2269. (Decipher RPG module: Starships)

(ST references: Star Trek Encyclopedia, Star Fleet Technical Manual; FASA RPG module: Federation Ship Recognition Manual)

Service history[edit | edit source]

Early history[edit | edit source]

The Potemkin, with an assigned registry number of NCC-1711 was one of the original batch of thirteen Constitution-class vessels that were ordered by Starfleet appropriation on stardate 0965. (TOS reference: Star Fleet Technical Manual)

Following the completion of construction, the Potemkin was launched on reference stardate 1/8912 and was now registered as NCC-1702. (FASA RPG module: Federation Ship Recognition Manual)

2260s[edit | edit source]

At some point prior to 2265, the Potemkin encountered a series of N'shaii satellites in orbit of Indish III. Using information gathered from previous encounters with the N'shaii by the USS Constitution, USS Excalibur and USS Lexington, the Potemkin was able to repel the invaders. (TOS - My Brother's Keeper novel: Constitution)

Just before assuming command of the USS Enterprise in 2264, Captain James T. Kirk was examining some personnel files and noticed Lee Kelso's file had a notation from the CO of the Potemkin said that Kelso wasn't officer material. Intrigued, Kirk contacted the Potemkin's CO and was told that he made the notation because Kelso cared too much. Upon hearing this, Kirk successfully applied for Kelso to be transferred to the Enterprise. (TOS - My Brother's Keeper novel: Constitution)

Around stardate 2/0410, the Potemkin was relaunched following a refit to Mk III Achernar-subclass specifications. (FASA RPG module: Federation Ship Recognition Manual)

In 2268, the Potemkin was assigned to a small task force of Constitution-class vessels that was ordered to participate in war games to test Doctor Richard Daystrom's M-5 computer, which had been installed aboard the USS Enterprise. When the M-5 suffered serious malfunction during the war games, it caused the Enterprise to attack her sister ships with full phasers, killing five hundred personnel aboard the Lexington and the Excalibur. The Potemkin and the USS Hood attempted a retreat, but they were both hit numerous times by phaser beams from the Enterprise.

After the Excalibur was crippled, the Potemkin and her remaining sister ships were ordered to destroy the Enterprise, but fortunately, the Enterprise crew were able to disable the M-5 before the order could be carried out. (TOS episode: "The Ultimate Computer")

In 2269, the Potemkin was ordered to rendezvous with the Enterprise in the Beta Aurigae star system so they could both conduct gravitational studies of the binary system. Unfortunately, the mission was delayed as the Enterprise was diverted to Camus II to deal with a distress call. (TOS episode: "Turnabout Intruder")

2270s[edit | edit source]

In 2270, the Potemkin was ordered to transport a shipment of strobolin from Beta Canopus to the USS Huron, so that the Huron could rendezvous with the Enterprise and get the urgently needed medicine to Commander Spock to treat his choriocytosis infection. (TAS episode: "The Pirates of Orion")

In 2273, the Potemkin was operating in sector 001 when she was reassigned, along with the USS Exeter, to deal with the Albasynnia affair. Rear Admiral Kirk had advised Admiral Heihachiro Nogura against sending both starships on the grounds that it would leave the sector largely undefended. Nogura overruled him, but Kirk was later proved correct when the V'ger cloud entity moved towards Earth. (TOS - Crucible novel: Provenance of Shadows)

Later service[edit | edit source]

Around stardate 2/2208, the Potemkin was declared inactive and placed in the reserve fleet. (FASA RPG module: Federation Ship Recognition Manual)

In 2293, the Potemkin, under the command of Captain D.M. Flinn, was conducting a scientific survey in sector 21185 near the Klingon Neutral Zone, when Operation Retrieve was proposed. The Potemkin was among the starships that would have been assembled for the proposed assault that would have rescued James T. Kirk and Dr. Leonard McCoy from Rura Penthe. According to the initial plans that were drawn up, the Potemkin would have retrieved the two officers, while her port and starboard flanks were protected by the USS Eagle and USS Excelsior. (TOS movie: Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)

Shortly after, the Potemkin, now under the command of Captain Gladstone, was assigned to transport Federation mediators Jocelyn and Clay Treadway for a rendezvous with the USS Enterprise-A, from where they would travel on to the planet Ssan. (TOS novel: Shadows on the Sun)

FASA continuity[edit | edit source]

On stardate 2/1201, the Potemkin was officially declared destroyed by Starfleet Command. She was later succeeded in name by the Enterprise-subclass USS Potemkin (NCC-1702), which was launched on reference stardate 2/1704. (FASA RPG module: Federation Ship Recognition Manual)
