A vacuum was a volume that was virtually empty of matter.

History and specifics[]

In the year 2268, Black Jack Nova, instead of quickly killing Spock and Montgomery Scott for being Federation spies, made them don spacesuits prior to being ejected from his ship's airlock so that they would die slowly in the vacuum of space as their oxygen ran out. (TOS comic: "The Flight of the Buccaneer")
