The Vanguard ships were protected by a nexus shield that was generated by two emitters on the outer hull, at the two ends of the vessel. Which generated radiation that would compromise a Federation starship's deflector shielding within 30 seconds and penetrate it's hull afterwards, unless the emitters were destroyed. Quantum torpedoes were capable of breaching the shield to permit a small starship through. The ship had hidden weapon systems, both energy beam weapons (arrays and turrets) and a rapid-firing missile launcher turret.
