Vehtora IV was a planet, the fourth planet of the Vehtora system, located in the galaxy's Alpha or Beta Quadrants. It was the homeworld of the once advanced, extinct Dhauti and the tribal Xhosa.
History and specifics[]
Vehtora IV had a light green-colored sky with a surface featuring mountains and forests. Lifeforms included birds, orchids, trees, and flowers. It appeared green from orbit.
The Anabarra colony was ten hours away at maximum warp.
10,000 years ago, the native Dhauti civilization used genetic engineering to create the Xhosa species as hosts for identity transference, but their creations slaughtered them. An artificial intelligence program in the Monitor's sanctum maintained an electromagnetic dampening field around the planet, which also served as a planetary defense system.
In 2270, the Monitor program was still operational. It activated the defense screen when the shuttlecraft Armstrong attempted to visit the surface, disrupting Vehtora IV's atmosphere. This caused the shuttle to crash and left its crew nearly defenseless against the Xhosa. Spock visited the sanctum and shut down its remaining systems to free the landing party, but also to allow the Xhosa a chance to evolve beyond their barbarous nature.
Doctor Bordell was assigned to return to Vehtora IV with a Starfleet research team to reassess the Xhosa in light of their history. (TOS - Unlimited comic: "As Flies to Wanton Boys")
