A verteron is a subatomic particle. They are usually associated with the creation of wormholes and can collect in verteron nodes. (DS9 episode: "Playing God", ST reference: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Technical Manual, DS9 novel: The Fall of Terok Nor)

History and specifics[]

The Bajoran wormhole may have been formed by self-sustaining verterons. (DS9 episode: "In the Hands of the Prophets")

It has been theorized that the Bajoran wormhole's interior consists of a twelve-dimensional helical verteron membrane, which shapes the tunnel shape of the phenomena. (ST reference: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Technical Manual)

When the Bajoran wormhole opens, it emits verteron particles. (DS9 novel: The Badlands, Part IV; TNG - DS9 comic: "The Enemy Unseen")

Verterons could be harnessed to create a verteron membrane around the Nexus; the unique energies of the energy ribbon created a self-sustaining barrier that would prevent any ships from entering the Nexus. (TNG eBook: The Stuff of Dreams)
