Viacom was a media corporation founded in 1971 as a television syndicator. Viacom purchased Paramount Communications in 1994, and thus the rights to Star Trek (as well as Star Trek publishers Pocket Books).
In 2005, Viacom split into two companies: CBS Corporation and Viacom. The copyrights to the Star Trek franchise currently belong to CBS Corporation (as CBS Studios Inc.), although other specific assets were divided between the two new corporate entities.
