History and specifics
Vice commodore is the most basic level flag officer rank, a grade higher than a captain and a grade below commodore or one star admiral and other admiral grades in most rank structures. This rank is roughly equivalent with the authority of a fleet captain. In military parlance, is it acceptable and normal to refer to a vice commodore simply as "commodore" in most forms of address.
Around the turn of the 2260s decade (late '50s or early '60s), James T. Kirk served aboard the starship USS Bonne Homme Richard as executive officer. During his service aboard, the ship came into contact with Kshatriyans, including a Vice Commodore Uligbar Dar Zotzchen. The vice commodore, Kirk later remarked, was a "devious son of a bitch, who couldn't be trusted when you're in a hurry." (TOS novel: Corona)
Larry Propp was a Human man who served in Starfleet as a vice commodore in the 23rd century, in the 2260s decade. By the year 2269, Propp was commanding officer of the USS Phoenix. In that year, Propp ordered Captain James T. Kirk and the USS Enterprise to Perry after they had completed their mission to Waycross. Propp was an old friend of Kirk's. (TOS novel: Perry's Planet)
- Larry Propp is the only instance in any Star Trek story of a Starfleet officer holding the rank of vice commodore. For the purposes of this wiki, the three-stripe rank insignia is shown to represent this rank. In ST reference: Star Fleet Technical Manual, the three-stripe insignia is illustrated and associated with the grade of commodore, but all TOS-era "full" commodores in canon were shown wearing a different band of braids. By process of elimination that leaves this grade of commodore to associate with that insignia.
