Voloczin, who went by the abbreviated moniker, Vol, was a member of the Voloczin, resembling a cross between an arachnid and a crab, with many tentacles. Because of the non-verbal (and otherwise unpronounceable) portions of Voloczin names, all members of the species typically go by the species' name during interactions with aliens.

Biography[]

In 2382, Voloczin - who was known as Vol to his friends - had joined Starfleet and was serving as a member of the Starfleet Corps of Engineers with the rank of Lieutenant commander, and at the time was the only member of his species serving in Starfleet. He was posted to the USS Challenger as Chief engineer, a position he held until the destruction of the vessel in 2383. (TNG novel: Indistinguishable from Magic)
