Memory Beta, non-canon Star Trek Wiki

Vranien was a male working-class Romulan who joined the Unification movement.

In 2382, Vranien was the leader of a group of Unificationists who traveled from Glintara to Janalwa to support and advise the Kinshaya Devotionalists in their non-violent protest of the Kinshaya government. After arriving in Rashtag, the Unificationlists and Devotionalists had a meeting in a the catacombs beneath an old abandoned church. Vranien believed their current struggles and being driven underground made them more sympathetic, and strongly backed Yeffir's insistence of non-violence over Nagrom's desire to openly fight the ruling regime.

At the Devotionalists first public rally, Vranien ensured the Romulans kept to the rear to reinforce their position as observers. However, the assembly was attacked by the local Inquisitors, which some of the Romulans and some of Nagrom's faction fought back against. Breen troops were called in to tilt the balance against the protestors, and Yeffir was injured and captured. When the two groups met again in secrecy, Vranien urged the Devotionalists to maintain a non-violent position, even knowing they may face force again; Nagrom wanted to respond with violence, but Vranien argued it would not help anything.

At a second rally the following day, the two groups did indeed face escalating threats from the Breen troops, but Vranien urged them to stand calm in the face of violence against them. Many were killed in what would come to be known as the Niamlar Massacre, but their bravery swayed public opinion to their cause.

Vranien and the remaining Unificationists remained on Janalwa for some time, but bid farewell to Janil and Del'oda, cover identities for Starfleet Lieutenants Jasminder Choudhury and T'Ryssa Chen. Vranien secretly revealed to Choudhury that he had seen through their disguises, giving his compliments to whoever had crafted her ears and thanks for their superiors' wisdom in sending someone like her.
