Memory Beta, non-canon Star Trek Wiki

The Vulcan Ministry of Information was an agency located within the Vulcan government. Among many Vulcans, service within this ministry was tantamount to a demotion. Duties amongst its personnel included greeting tourists, giving out directions and maps as well as suggesting sites of interest to visitors. It was considered a position that was not challenging to an individual's skills.

In 2153, Ambassador Soval suggested that Subcommander T'Pol be reassigned from Enterprise and instead serve in the Ministry of Information, which he believed would be refreshing for her. Rather than accept the placement, T'Pol defied the Vulcan High Command, which led to her enlisting in the United Earth Starfleet during the mission into the Delphic Expanse. (ENT novel: The Expanse)
