The war machine was a weapon created by the humanoid natives of a planet in the universe of superspace to keep the peace between the citadels. When alien invaders arrived, the machine was activated, but then went out of control and began destroying everything in sight, forcing the people into underground shelters. The machine shut down after all life on the surface was destroyed.

Centuries later, the machine was reactivated when it detected the presence of a member of the Galactic Space Patrol who had landed on the planet in a spacecraft. The machine destroyed the man's ship and tried to kill him, but he instead caused a still-running nuclear reactor to explode, sacrificing himself and destroying the machine; however, its mind module survived. (TOS comic: "Siege in Superspace")

The war machine first appeared in the comic story "U.F.M.", first published in Star Spangled War Stories #170 (June 1973).
