A weapon battery is a type of weapon technology where a weapon is placed in a fixed position or mounted in some way so that the emplacement will fit the application of specific tactics.
In some cases a mobile weapons battery is possible, such as a tank or other vehicle, but sometimes will have to stop moving in order to fix its position to ensure proper firepower and accuracy. Weapon batteries can be mounted on a larger vehicle without such considerations, such as turrets, a starship-mounted weapon.
History and specifics[]
In the year 2267, shuttlecraft NCC-1701/8 approached an underwater battle between octopus monsters and several Tekkorian sea-snakes. One of the sea-snakes wrecked an undersea weapon battery and stunned the two Tekkorians who operated it. Spock rescued the stunned humanoids. (TOS comic: "Under the Sea")
The Iskonian asteroid field was laden with hidden weapon batteries to serve as a planetary defense system for Iskonia. In 2274, the weapons destroyed Klingon Commander Kolak's K't'inga-class battlecruiser. As the pursuing starship USS Enterprise approached the planet, her shields were able to withstand the bombardment, and phasers knocked out a few of the cannons before the barrage ceased. (TOS comic: "Restructuring Is Futile")
A commander of weapon batteries was Prelate Zhom, a holographic character representing a faction of a simulated race in a variation of the Kobayashi Maru scenario for prospective senior staff-ranking individuals training for Federation Starfleet positions at the dawn of the 25th century. When Seven of Nine was taking this commander's test in the early 2400s decade, the opposing side, led by Cleric Zaka used a communicator to signal Zaka's Central Command for an immediate "doomsday launch". Prelate Zhom then called upon their side to begin firing forward batteries without further preparations. The holoprogram ended as a failure. (PIC - Stargazer comic: "Issue 1")
- Since the species and participants in the holoprogram were likely fictional, the brief scene where the weapons batteries were called for did not expound upon their nature or location.
In 2378, Starfleet's aid to the Tzenkethi included providing a weapons battery for their fight against the Sha'zol during the Festival of Supremacy on Tzenket, serving as a cannon and operated by Harry Kim. (ST - IDW Star Trek - A Savage World of Glass and Bone comic: "Part 3")
