A weather modification network (or weather control grid or weather control satellite network) was a technology used to control or influence weather patterns of a planet.

History and specifications[]

In 2365, the most advanced technology in the Federation was capable of creating pockets of artificially controlled weather. This was achieved by interrupting, redirecting, or augmenting key natural wind currents, modifying the temperature of large bodies of water, and adding or deducting atmospheric moisture. However, controlling or manipulating the weather around an entire planet simultaneously was impossible due to the immense amount of energy required. It was for instance beyond the technological reach of the most advanced civilisations in the Federation, to mitigate consequences of an ongoing Greenhouse effect. (TNG novel: Power Hungry)

Weather modification networks could reduce the danger of destructive weather phenomena like tornadoes. Once common on Earth, by the 24th century a tornado could be dissipated by the network long before causing any damage. (TNG episode: "True Q")

Such networks were also deployed to prevent hurricanes, particularly on colony planets. (Adventures RPG module: Beta Quadrant Sourcebook)
