Wilhelm Schang was a 23rd century Human man, a career Starfleet officer who rose to become commanding officer of Starbase 13 in the late 2260s decade.
Biography[]
Schang was broadly built. He spent his 40-year career aboard all types of starships, including serving as the CO of the USS Tresher in the 2250s decade. At that time, he served with a young James T. Kirk.
Schang married Aurora Schang and they had a son, Albert Schang. After they divorced, he didn't see the boy for the next 15 years.
By the late 2260s, Commodore Schang considered himself an old man and had metal-gray hair. By the year 2269, he served as the CO of Starbase 13. He disliked what he felt was a tedious assignment and had requested multiple transfers to no avail. Schang made sure his son could enter Starfleet Academy, but Albert failed his freshman courses. Schang arranged for the crewman to be stationed at the starbase.
In 2269, the Federation starship USS Enterprise docked for general maintenance at the starbase. Captain Kirk found out from Gilla Dupree that her missing father Jacob Kell had been seen on quarantined Heartland. Schang allowed Kirk to retrieve Kell. He was willing not to mention where the Enterprise went. In exchange, he asked that Kirk to take Albert along and train him as his personal steward. (TOS novel: Devil World)
