For the primary universe counterpart, see John Kyle.

In the mirror universe, Winston Kyle was a Terran male who served in the Imperial Starfleet of the Terran Empire during the 23rd century. He was a transporter chief on the ISS Enterprise (NCC-1701).

Kyle had been operating the transporter during an ion storm, Captain James T. Kirk , Doctor Leonard McCoy, Lieutenant Commander Montgomery Scott , and Lieutenant Nyota Uhura were beaming aboard the Enterprise at the same time as their counterparts from the original universe were beaming on board to their Enterprise. A power surge in both universes led to the two sets of people being transposed, and the people from the original universe beamed on board the mirror universe starship.

Mr. Spock and Kyle were unaware of this transposition taking place - it appeared to merely be a difficult transporter cycle. Spock then confronted Kyle over his apparent failure to compensate for the ion interference. Taking Kyle's agonizer Spock used it to torture Kyle in punishment. (TOS episode: "Mirror, Mirror")

Kyle continued to serve aboard the Enterprise until at least 2277, by which time he had risen to the rank of lieutenant commander. Following Spock's elimination of his would-be assassin Willard Decker in that year, he considered appointing Kyle to succeed Decker as first officer but eventually chose to give the position to Kevin Riley. (TOS - Mirror Universe novel: The Sorrows of Empire)
