Wringing in the New Year was a pulp mystery book in the Dixon Hill series of Earth detective literature.
History and specifics[]
It was the fourth novel in the pantheon, and was first published in the 1930s or 1940s decades. Events centered around a serial killer who targeted a woman on 31 December each year. One scene took place during the New Year's Eve celebration at Times Square in New York City.
In 2375, Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Commander Data, and Q were taken to Q Continuum, rendered as the Times Square setting of the novel. Wearing Dix's fedora and trench coat, Picard recognized the setting and relevance of the date. The crowd wasn't looking at new year's descending ball, but rather a void like a black hole, signifying a reality-ending crisis.
Picard stepped onto the street and aimed Dix's revolver at an oncoming car. The Q driving the vehicle stopped and let them in. The fare to get to city hall was $926.20. (TNG novel: I, Q)
