Xandu was, according to Chang, a sorcerer residing on his planet. In 2264, Chang told Captain James T. Kirk that he was losing a war with Xandu, who had suspended a gigantic flaming sword over his city. Chang tasked Kirk and his crew with obtaining for him the Sceptre of the Sun, the only weapon with which he could defeat his rival. However, after returning with the Sceptre, Spock revealed that he had deduced that there was no Xandu, and that the entire quest had merely been a ruse to distract them while Chang made his attempt to seize control of the USS Enterprise. (TOS comic: "Sceptre of the Sun")
