Xenylon was an algae-based synthetic material used in the Federation to make Starfleet uniforms. (TAS episode: "The Terratin Incident")

History and specifics[]

Xenylon was waterproof (TOS novel: Death's Angel) and fireproof (TOS movie: The Undiscovered Country; TNG novel: Power Hungry), but could tear quite easily when the right amount of shear force was applied. (TOS episode: "The Savage Curtain")

Xenylon also had variable reactions to temperature that made it appropriate and comfortable for wear in a number of different climate conditions. (TOS episode: "Spock's Brain"; TNG episode: "Let He Who Is Without Sin...")
