- For other uses, see Yamato.
The Yamato-class was a type of Federation starship, a dreadnought cruiser active in Starfleet service in the early 25th century.
History and specifications
It was an advanced variant of the Galaxy X-class, incorporating systems and architecture from the Andromeda-class exploration cruiser. (STO video game: Delta Rising)
Technical data
Like its parent design, the Yamato-class was armed with a phaser spinal lance and could be equipped with a cloaking device. It also featured supplemental subsystems that could supply the vessel with extra power for short periods, as well as a hangar bay capable of deploying small craft into combat. (STO video game: Delta Rising)

- It is possible the USS Yamato II, a Galaxy X-class ship, was refit to become the prototype of this class, which is an offshoot of the Galaxy X. There is the additional possibility that there was a new prototype named Yamato built.

Background
This section is written from the Real World point of view. |
The name Yamato-class appears to be a double reference, both to the USS Yamato, lost with all hands to the Iconian software weapon in 2365, and to the space opera anime series Space Battleship YamatoWP wherein the World War II Japanese battleship YamatoWP was raised, repaired, and fitted with a "wave motion gun" to do battle in space.
