With the Klingon threat behind them, the crew of the Enterprise begins their victory tour of the original planets of the Federation. But they'll soon discover that for all of the danger they faced on the five-year mission, the biggest threat of all may be something closer to home.

- With the Guide of Fire ordeal behind them the crew of the Enterprise resume their trip back to Earth, but as they get closer to home, so does the upcoming election. Kirk has convinced his old friend, Attorney General Areel Shaw, to run for the Federation Presidency on a platform of exploration and expansion but on the other side are the Originalists, a movement that would put a stop to exploration-and missions like Kirk's-for good.
Stardate 7265.4, the USS Enterprise has been sent to Andoria at the request of Areel Shaw to investigate the Originalist movement. As the ship enters the system, James T. Kirk is pulled aside by Spock. Correctly deducing that Kirk intends to have him accompanying him to Andoria, the Vulcan asks that he remain aboard ship, both so he can keep watch and doubting a detached logical mind will have any effect on the irrational world of politics. As a substitute, Spock suggests taking Bright Eyes, hoping that a crew member from a non-Federation world will show the Originalists how wrong their philosophy is.
Accompanied by Montgomery Scott and Bright Eyes, Kirk dramatically beams into Andor, Bright Eyes' presence earning Campaign Chief of Staff Renei's ire. Brought to Renei's office, both sides are clearly aware that Kirk is on a spy mission before Renei reveals the Originalists' candidate: Harry Mudd!
Over Kirk and Scott's transparent fury, Mudd explains that after serving his time, he turned to the political arena. After all, what is a politician if not a business man? After an insult towards Mudd's android assistant Celia, Kirk and Scott turn to Renei to confirm she's being serious with them. The Andorian confirms that she and her movement stand behind Mudd, despite his lack of political experience, banking on his charisma.
In their guest quarters, Kirk reveals that he'd assumed Shaw was overreacting but he is now readily convinced of the Originalist threat. And even on the off-chance that Mudd isn't a puppet ruler, he's too dangerous to be allowed any sort of power. Remembering that Celia has been handling campaign finances, Scott set out after her, hoping to enact some clever rewiring, but is backhanded away once he gets too close.
Celia then makes her way to Mudd's office, just in time to see Gary Seven, healed of all the injuries Kirk inflicted on him, materialize, having a few questions for the would-be president.
