Yuri Gagarin was a Russian cosmonaut. Gagarin became the first human to reach outer space when Vostok 1 orbited Earth on 12 April 1961.
Biography[]
During his mission, he orbited for 1 hour 48 minutes and reached an altitude of 205.5 miles. He died in 1968 during a Russian Air Force test flight. (Star Trek Annual 1969 article: Who Was First?)

Four Starfleet starship classes and several Federation starships have been named for him over the centuries, from the DY-732-class VK Yuri Gagarin to the Saber-class USS Gagarin. Montgomery Scott served aboard the USS Gagarin scout in the mid-23rd century.
