Yuri Gagarin was a Russian cosmonaut. Gagarin became the first human to reach outer space when Vostok 1 orbited Earth on 12 April 1961.

Biography[]

During his mission, he orbited for 1 hour 48 minutes and reached an altitude of 205.5 miles. He died in 1968 during a Russian Air Force test flight. (Star Trek Annual 1969 article: Who Was First?)

Legacy[]

A statue of Yuri Gagarin was located at the Starfleet Academy campus in the 2250s decade of the Kelvin timeline. (TOS - Starfleet Academy novel: The Assassination Game)

In the 24th century, Marjorie Montero told her son Wheeler Stinson about Gagarin and his spaceflight when Stinson was a boy. (DS9 novel: Ascendance)

A statue of Gagarin still stood at the Academy in the 44th century, along with those of John Glenn, Neil Armstrong, Albert Einstein, Zefram Cochrane, Richard Daystrom, Halsey, James T. Kirk, and William T. Riker. (TNG - Strange New Worlds II short story: "I Am Become Death")

Four Starfleet starship classes and several Federation starships have been named for him over the centuries, from the DY-732-class VK Yuri Gagarin to the Saber-class USS Gagarin. Montgomery Scott served aboard the USS Gagarin scout in the mid-23rd century.
