Zachary Solano was a Human man serving in Starfleet in the 24th century. In 2380 he held the rank of captain and served as commanding officer of the Centaur-class science vessel USS Resolute.[1]

Starfleet Academy diploma

Captain Solano was a graduate of Starfleet Academy with a Degree in Command and Control. He was also a train hobbyist, often making references to steam engines being "the warp drive of their day." He kept his diploma as well as a model train on display in his ready room.[2]

In the late 2350s Solano worked with Doctor Leah Brahms at Utopia Planitia's Theoretical Propulsion Group developing an experimental drive system based on a rare isotope of dilithium. Starfleet considered the project to be too dangerous, and abandoned the research. Solano continued to consider Brahms a friend.[1]

In 2361 while Solano was first officer on the USS Tuckerman, he led a team to survey quantum resonance in the rings of Resedia VI. The team consisted of the science officer from the USS Potemkin along with the shuttle pilot, Lieutenant Will Riker.[2]

Little is known about Solano's record until 2373, where he fought in the Dominion War until 2375.

In 2380 he had been assigned command of the USS Resolute.[1]

Starfleet Command informed him that Leah Brahms had resumed working on the experimental warp drive in secret and had taken an extended sabbatical to the edge of Federation space near the Talarian border, where she had gone missing. Hoping to avoid instigating an incident and a repeat of the Galen border conflicts, Starfleet had ordered the Resolute to remain covert.[1]

During the mission, the Resolute was captured and Captain Solano and Commander Luke Sutherland were taken prisoner. A rescue effort by Commander Westbrook and Lieutenant Bedrosian managed to free them, though Westbrook was injured in the attempt. They quickly located Dr. Brahms and told her they were there to rescue her from her Talarian captors. To their surprise, Brahms told Solano she was working with the Talarians willingly.[3] Commandant Hektar, the Talarian leader, was enraged by the intrusion. He ordered the Resolute destroyed and the crew killed. Captain Jono Endar and Dr. Brahms managed to persuade him not to follow through by explaining that Brahms needed the ship to test her prototype engine and that the loss of a Federation starship would only bring more starships, more investigators.

Solano agreed for the Resolute to be used for the warp drive experiment, and sensing this was his opportunity to reconnect with his old friend and push his name into the history books, he devoted himself to it fully. Meanwhile, Commander Sutherland worked with the Resolute senior staff to resist, obstruct, and sabotage the Talarian occupation on-board the ship. Sutherland, Commander Yann Urmott, and Captain Jono put their plan into action, causing the Talarian soldiers on the Resolute to flee. Solano and Brahms, who had not expected the disruption, were furious and betrayed.[4]

In order to escape, the Resolute had to utilize the new drive system. The prototype was initially successful, but damage caused during the escape combined with the volatility of the dilithium isotope caused the warp core to fail catastrophically.[5] The Resolute executed an emergency saucer separation while Commander Sutherland piloted the secondary hull clear of the saucer, saving the crew but sacrificing his life in the process.[6]

The failure of the drive combined with nearly losing his ship and the loss of his first officer and 22 crewmates left Solano shattered. Instead of a terrific achievement to elevate his career to legendary status, he was shrouded in shame and failure. He offered his resignation to Starfleet Command, which was denied. He was ordered not to speak of the incident with Dr. Brahms or the Talarians to anyone, and remained in command of the USS Resolute during her 6-month refit at Starbase 128.[6]
