Memory Beta, non-canon Star Trek Wiki

The Zalkonians were a reclusive humanoid race native to the planet of Zalkon. In the 24th century, many individuals of the race were transforming into non-corporeal lifeforms. The government dealt with these individuals harshly. Zalkonian warships were relatively advanced, and posed a risk to a Galaxy-class Federation vessel. The warships also possessed some sort of weapon which was able to suffocate crews of enemy vessels. First contact with the United Federation of Planets occurred in 2366.

The Zalkonians seemed to occupy a region of space of unknown size. The Federation had apparently not been aware of the Zalkonians or their space as of 2366. (TNG episode: "Transfigurations")
