Zaran II was a planet, the second planet in the Zaran star system in the space of the galaxy's Alpha Quadrant, homeworld to the Zaranite civilization. (ST reference: Star Charts; TOS novel: Triangle)

Zaran II was a class K planet with significant volcanic activity that spewed toxic gases into the atmosphere, resulting in a chemosynthesis-based ecosystem. (Star Trek Adventures RPG module: Alpha Quadrant Sourcebook)

Its deserts were cold and full of metallic sands. Its atmosphere was primarily made up of oxygen, argon and fluorine. (Decipher RPG module: Aliens)

Surface features included buttes and plateaus, along with deep sea beds that remained frozen for much of the year. It had sparse animal and vegetation life. Surface minerals were made up of 8% gemstones, 14% industrial crystals, and trace amounts of special minerals. It had a technological/sociopolitical index of 999876-98 and a planetary trade profile of DCDDDCB/B(B). (FASA RPG module: Star Trek IV Sourcebook Update)

In the early 2250s decade, on reference stardate 1/9302.23, the USS Clandre made first contact with a Zaranite starship orbiting Zaran II. (FASA RPG module: Star Trek IV Sourcebook Update)

A near assassination of the Zaranite negotiator by a Klingon operative during dilithium mining rights negotiations led to the Federation designating Zaran II a protectorate on reference stardate 1/9307.01, just prior to the Four Years War. (Decipher RPG module: Aliens)

Zaran's status in the Federation was upgraded in the 2330s. (FASA RPG module: Star Trek: The Next Generation Officer's Manual)

Zaran was not listed as a full member of the Federation in Star Charts, but was color-coded as a Federation world, indicating Zaran is an ally or protectorate.

In 2273, the Federation starship USS Enterprise visited Zaran II to return Zantra to his homeworld. (TOS comic: "The Real McCoy")
