Zeon (or M43 Alpha V) was a planet located in the space of the galaxy's Beta Quadrant, the fifth planet in orbit of the M43 Alpha star system, at coordinates 2.02S 6.95E. Zeon the outer of two class M planets orbiting M43 Alpha, and is homeworld to the humanoid Zeon civilization. Zeon is the sister world to the fourth planet, Ekos.

History[]

By the mid 23rd century, Zeon had developed interplanetary spaceflight. Seeing the troubles that the neighboring Ekosian people were going through, Zeon began providing assistance. Also during the mid 23rd century, Federation historian John Gill visited Ekos. When Gill found Ekos in the throes of anarchy, he chose to violate the Prime Directive in order to help the Ekosians. Gill tried to institute a benign version of a Nazi government on Ekos, but failed to realize was that such a government inherently invited abuse, and was soon co-opted by his subordinate Melakon. When Melakon took over, the Nazis of Ekos soon began exhibiting the same brutal tendencies that the original Nazis had, and the people of Zeon found themselves the targets of Ekosian hatred, much like the Jewish people had on Earth under Nazi Germany.

Captain James T. Kirk and the USS Enterprise arrived to find out what had happened to Gill, and discovered that his tampering in the Ekosian government had led to the rise of the Nazi state on Ekos. When they arrived, Melakon was preparing his final solution—a massive attack on the people of Zeon. The Enterprise crew found the drugged Gill, and revived him in time to put a stop to stop the attack on Zeon. (TOS episode & Star Trek 12 novelization: Patterns of Force)

Though Kirk hoped the collapse of the Ekosian government would lead to peace, instead both Ekos and Zeon became more xenophobic and aggressive. Then, at some point between 2268 and 2287, the Klingon Empire initiated contact with the M43 Alpha system, and began providing arms to both sides. (SCE - Wounds eBook: Fables of the Prime Directive)

In the 2280s, Zeon was a noted center of trade and culture, and was known for its advancement in science and industry. By reference stardate 2/2306.01, the world had a population of 3.59 billion individuals, and the government remained a protectorate of the Federation. (FASA RPG module: The Federation)

The Klingon interference led to an arms race which exploded into full-scale conflict in 2287. The conflict continued even after the Klingons withdrew following the explosion of Praxis in 2293. The Federation attempted to broker a peace between Ekos and Zeon, but as of stardate 34675.8, the conflict continued, and had claimed the life of Starfleet Lieutenant Shewer Freeman. At that time, Commodore Göller recommended withdrawing all Federation personnel from the system. (SCE - Wounds eBook: Fables of the Prime Directive)
