Zero-point energy (ZPE) is a concept of energy in quantum physics that is loosely defined as the basic, lowest energy present in a system.

In the 24th century, the Federation refined technology to weaponize disruptions in zero-point energy by using a specialized photon torpedo explosion. The resulting weapon became known as the quantum torpedo. (DS9 reference: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Technical Manual; ST reference: USS Enterprise Owners' Workshop Manual)
