Zeta Reticuli II was a planet, the second planet of the Zeta Reticuli system, located in the galaxy's Beta Quadrant. It was once the homeworld of a developing Zeta Reticulan civilization.
History and specifics[]
Zeta Reticuli II had a nondescript, sandy-looking appearance from orbit, with some regions of green. It had a desert climate with a few palm trees. The planet had a breathable but shallow, thinning atmosphere, which over eons changed color from blue to teal.
In 7700 B.C.E., an alien species visited the system and gave the Zeta Reticulans advanced technology and a computer to guide them. The computer predicted that the planet's atmosphere would eventually thin to the point where infant natives could not survive increasing ambient radiation.
By 2000 B.C.E., leaving hundreds in suspended animation, the rest of the natives abandoned their world aboard a Zeta Reticulan colony ship. Operational technology remaining on the surface included plated neutronium shielding, generators, power fields, disruptors and a planetary defense beam capable of shrinking the hull of an orbiting starship.
In 2274, two days before an approaching meteoroid shower of siderites was due to decimate the surface, a landing party from the USS Enterprise studied the civilization's Egyptian-like monuments, which included armed pyramids, an animated Sphinx and temples to their god Khnum. When hibernating Zeta Reticulans were discovered, the Enterprise protected the planet's culture by destroying the meteors.
Later, the natives were resettled on a safer planet, leaving Zeta Reticuli II without a population. (TOS comic: "We Are Dying, Egypt, Dying!")
