For the primary universe counterpart, see Zhao Sheng.

Zhao Sheng was a Terran officer of the Imperial Starfleet who served as captain of the ISS Endeavour in the 2260s and 2270s. He was assigned to the Sixth Fleet at Imperial Starbase 47 (Vanguard) in the Taurus Reach, under Commodore Diego Reyes. (VAN - Mirror Universe short story: "The Black Flag")

Biography[edit | edit source]

Zhao began to question the use of terror as a means of discipline as a result of the increasing influence of Admiral Spock. In 2275, he followed Spock's example and abolished the use of agonizers and agony booths on the Endeavour, and urged his friend and ally, Captain Clark Terrell of the ISS Sagittarius, to do likewise. After Terrell was killed and the Sagittarius destroyed by Reyes, Spock sent his agent T'Prynn to cultivate allies in Reyes' command staff, kill Reyes and his allies, and destroy Vanguard. Zhao aided the operation by attacking Vanguard, claiming Reyes' former rank and command of his fleet. Reporting the success of her mission back to Spock, T'Prynn commented that though Zhao was overly ambitious, he was amenable to Spock's cause, which was rapidly gaining support within the Imperial Starfleet. (VAN - Mirror Universe short story: "The Black Flag"; TOS - Mirror Universe novel: The Sorrows of Empire)

Infuriated, Empress Hoshi Sato III ordered Grand Admiral Matthew Decker to terminate Spock, but Spock outmaneuvered him and claimed Decker's rank for himself in 2277. Shortly afterwards, aided by his young protégée Saavik, Spock overthrew the Empress and took power over the Empire. Once firmly in power, the new Emperor named Zhao, his chief ally in the fleet, as Grand Admiral. (TOS - Mirror Universe novel: The Sorrows of Empire)
